2010 Short Story Writing Contest
Notes from Damiano Pietropaolo,
Judge for the 2010 AICW Short Story Writing Competition:
After much reflection on all of these contributions, I have selected Growth as the winning entry, and Il suono delle campane as the runner up. Both of these, in my view, raised the anecdotal storytelling that is common to all the entries to literary levels that were able to evoke larger, more universal themes.
Some detailed notes from Damiano:
Growth – I found this to be a very good handling of a narrative that rewards the reader with a reveal whose emotional impact is at once heart rending for the child narrator and the reader. The simple narrative, anchored in the point of view of the child, evokes a grown up world which is at once real and fantastical, and in which the partially realized portrait of the grandfather achieves a mysterious and mythic presence. (The author should consider a less prosaic and didactic title for this story) Mike Dell’Aquila
Il suono delle campane – In recent literature on the themes of exile and return the evocation of a lost paradise, relegated to mythic memory, is usually the entry point for narratives that hinge of the “you can’t go home again” predicament of the immigrant experience. While at times it borders on sentimentality, the poetic evocation of the village seen through the eyes of the Viaggiatore lifts the tale above the anecdotal by the power and sensuality of its language.
